Have you gotten into the North side of the Beartooth Mountains around Red Lodge yet? Since this area is so far from Cooke City, ( and by popluar demand!) I have decided to add this forum. California Ice, West Rosebud Canyon, Rock Creek, the Stillwater drainage, ....

Anyone been up to the couloir on Whitetail recently? If so, how does it look?
It would bet it is in, it faces north, and if you call the park you can see if you can drive out to artist point, its only an hour and half from artist point.

Has anyone driven up East Rosebud recently? I'm wondering if a car will make it close to the trailhead this weekend. Thanks.

Christina and I attempted to climb Woodbine falls on Saturday Feb 7th. I had never been to the area and, from the road, Woodbine seemed to be covered in ice. Temps were in the mid 40's as we hiked in on a beautiful day. Once we approached the base of the climb, we could hear and barely see another team of three above us. The falls were gushing down the middle but seemed to be good ice on either side.
I will try a few more photos from Leaning Tree a couple of weeks ago. All in all it was a very cool climb with close to 4 full pitches by the time we zig zagged across it a couple of times. There is a side veiw from near the bottom of the canyon and the last photo is the last 15ft of the climb. The climb splits at the top and had about 100ft of very steep ice on the other fork at the top. Mike
Wednesday I climbed an ice route on the north side of Mt Rearguard. The route is probably WI 3, with 4 pitches each about 40 meters length, and maybe 3 more 3rd class sections above to reach the plateau. The ice was solid and only a little brittle. In each of the six V-threads I put in to rap off, the ice shavings from the screw were left in the holes and I had to blow the shavings out in order to thread the cord. I've never seen the ice that consistant before.
Almost in Montana
